From childhood, I was driven to be someone who wanted to give back to society. While I could see and be concerned by the multifarious challenges facing the world in less developed countries, some of these affected me more than others. I was traumatized to see members of the society with mutilated limbs, who had to live differently sometimes begging for their subsistence. Similarly, as an avid field hockey player, I could see similar challenges facing athletes and how sports injuries could lead to permanent disability. Over some time, I realized that I could harness my love for technology and math to brainstorm ideas on how to solve such issues using robotic prowess.

My journey into robotics was partly planned, and partly spontaneous, beginning with a summer camp in primary school where I learned Python programming and constructed a toy robot. The experience of building a toy robot deeply resonated with me. Soon I was coding in my free time, and reading articles in technological fields such as image recognition. But I wanted to do more. Last year, I wrote a research paper about an object detection algorithm for tracking hockey balls and was the chief technical officer of my school robotics team which won an innovation award.

However, my real breakthrough came last year when I was included on a team in the Precision Systems Design Laboratory at the University of Michigan to develop a remotely controlled prosthetic arm. My team designed a novel type of prosthetic arm, powered using Controlled Variable Transmission technology, allowing for increased mobility and dexterity, as well as decreased cost and weight.

It is said that passion with perspicacity brings progress. While my story has been combining my strength as a student to use new robotic technology in health-related applications to better lives, I believe my road to solving societal issues through robotics is only beginning. Technology and artificial intelligence hold immense possibilities in many areas, from minimally invasive surgical robots to automated image recognition for identifying fractures. Winning the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award has inspired me to continue on the path to achieving my dream of improving the world using technology.
