Take a coin flip. Simple—isn’t it? A perpetual 50-50. In computer science, we learn that the world runs on sequences of 0s and 1s. Basic binary bits of information. But then, two years ago, I signed up for a quantum computing course.
“Forget 0s and 1s”, the professor exclaimed, “In quantum computing, we work with qubits, that can be both 0 and 1 at the same time.” To say I was beyond confused was an understatement. I hated this feeling of not understanding. I was trying to force a quantum concept into a binary-shaped hole in my mind. The frustration was real, but also a creative catalyst. So, I shifted my strategy. The breakthrough wasn’t a single moment, but rather a synthesis. It was a process of targeted questioning, collaborative deconstruction, and intellectual humility to reframe my entire approach that solved the issue. I was humbled, not by my failure to understand, but by a different perspective. Gradually, new concepts became almost second nature. I could pick them up almost as fast as you could toss a coin.
That experience inspired me. I realised that, across Hong Kong, there must be others alit with the same curiosity, yet hesitating, uncertain where to start. Thus, I led workshops, whether it be for the underprivileged, or for other women like me, on the very subject that first inspired me. The greatest success was hearing the echoes of my own curiosity in the questions of others, because sometimes, the most meaningful impact often begins not with a directive, but with an invitation—to wonder, to try, and to begin.
Being outstanding is not just about the titles we hold; it’s about the impact we make. We are outstanding not in the way our academics might present, or the statistics we boast, but in our character and our mindset. An outstanding student does not hoard knowledge but builds a platform for others to begin their own journey. An outstanding student is curious, and strives to discover all that is new. An outstanding student takes action, because action is the echo of your will in the present and impact is the ripple that shapes the future.
Our world is full of unresolved questions, and some of the greatest theories and breakthroughs would never have been postulated should a simple question never have been asked from someone who wasn’t afraid to ask one more: Why?
