When I was in early secondary school, the pandemic transformed everything virtual, creating a lot of spare time. This change prompted me to think: what can I do to make the most of my secondary life? The pandemic might last forever, but my school life does not last forever. Therefore, I took the opportunity to develop a passion for science through joining the International Junior Science Olympiad Team. Despite barriers to learning created by the online mode, I have built a solid foundation in science after various theoretical and practical-based competitions.
From my perspective, being an “outstanding” student is more than being exemplary in my own studies; more importantly, it is about creating an impact using the knowledge I possess. For instance, my team and I have conducted scientific research to eradicate plastic pollution using superworms and mollusks, and also to investigate the antimicrobial activity of organic extracts, achieving multiple awards and demonstrating how science can be applied in the real world. Additionally, I coordinated our school’s STEAM fair, which drew over 1,000 children to learn about STEAM through workshops, exhibits, and talks. Externally, I coordinated a 3-month Artificial Intelligence course for children with special educational needs. Through coordinating these initiatives, I have acknowledged the importance of providing accessible STEAM education, particularly to underprivileged children. A lot of hidden potential to be discovered, and only through these opportunities can they further develop their interests.
Additionally, “outstanding” to me is not to be top in one aspect, but instead to utilize my strength to contribute in multiple ways. Thus, in addition to dedicating my time to STEAM, I also contribute to the school community by serving in various positions, such as being a student ambassador, who is responsible for introducing our school’s undefiled heritage to esteemed guests like alumni and university admission officers. Besides, as a vice chairman of the Civic Education Group, I have also coordinated several initiatives, such as the Top Ten News Election, and helped organise the Current Affairs competition to raise awareness for current affairs and media literacy in the school.
As I conclude my journey as a DBS student, I often reflect on the meaning I take from these commitments- in fact, what drives me to continue all the time is the ability to drive a positive change through my activities, just like what my school motto suggests, “To Serve and to Lead!”!
