Change in a community must always be rooted in a change in the performance of the individual. As an ethnic minority, racial discrimination is something I am unfortunately privy to. I have experienced crass jokes, relentless questioning and doubt regarding my educational and language ability and bullying … all of which erode my dignity and worth, simply because I look different. Yet, such harrowing experiences have made me realise that my silence is as good as quiet consensus to those who perpetrate racism and to those who experience it. As such, I was motivated to volunteer as a tutor for ethnic minorities, to become a beacon of light for those who are similarly disadvantaged. It is a great privilege to be able to even make a tiny dent in this institutional social issue, by mentoring aspiring ethnic minorities and seeing them flourish to become a more daring version of themselves. This is also why I aspire to be an educator in the future, to be amongst the catalysts of change to see equal opportunities for all.

Being able to turn setbacks into triumphs is a crucial prerequisite in life. By embracing my own identity, I hope to inspire other minorities like me to speak up against social injustices. As the content team director of Dear Asian Youth (Hong Kong Chapter), a youth magazine that aims to empower, educate and inspire Asian Youth all over the world, I have explored and written several texts about the issues of gender equality, racism, mental health, and even endangerment of wildlife species. Through this, I realised that the key to galvanising change is empathy. We first have to be able to discern the strife of various minority groups, before advocating for meaningful shifts in society.

‘Outstanding’ is a powerful, all-encompassing word. Not only is it about passion, perseverance and reflection, but it is also about continuity, a promise to continue striving for progress in a flawed society. I am beyond honoured to have been selected as a winner for the HKOSA alongside such accomplished peers and would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to Youth Arch Foundation for this opportunity, as well as my parents, teachers and friends, who have provided me with unyielding support.
