I have always been a Mathematics lover since I was little. As I grew up, I developed a passion towards Astronomy and other aspects of Science. For certain moments in life, I have thought that my life is all about Mathematics and Science. It turns out that my life is more than that. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I have tried different activities to develop my interests and potentials. I have been involved in debate, music and visual arts and have joined a number of competitions. Although I usually did not perform very well in the competitions, it is all these experiences which have enriched my life, broadened my horizons and witnessed my growth. All these experiences encourage me to keep pursuing excellence and reaching for higher grounds.
In the past, I had always been focused on my studies, while paying little attention to things happening around us. As I grew up, it dawned on me that we are blessed to live in an affluent society, and that many people in society deserve our attention. It was then when I started participating in different voluntary services. I tried to reach out to the underprivileged in society. For instance, I visited asylum seekers in Hong Kong, arranged some scientific workshops for the elderly and visited children in remote areas in mainland China. The most unforgettable among all these experiences was the ‘Adventure-Ship’ program, which involved taking part in water activities with children with mental disabilities. The participants might not even have the slightest idea of what they were doing, let alone enjoy activities which a lot of us take for granted. All these experiences have made me realise how lucky I am to have so many opportunities, and thus I am determined to make every endeavour to contribute to our society.
As for my future career, I hope to become a doctor. Health is of paramount importance and I hope my passion and knowledge can help people in need. I will definitely work hard to achieve my goal and contribute to society.
I am extremely grateful that the Youth Arch Foundation has awarded me the prize, and I must thank my parents for nurturing me throughout all these years, as well as my Principal and teachers for encouraging me to take part in such a marvellous and amazing election. I must also thank my learning companions, including all friends I met in the election, for accompanying me to grow up and encouraging me to keep trying.
