As a child, I always wondered: “What are people in other places doing now?” Since I was young, I have been curious about the world around me and such inquisitiveness prompted me to take the initiative to explore life and society. I enjoy meeting different people and I am interested in learning about their stories. This early enthusiasm not only broadened my horizons, but also laid the foundation for me to participate in service.

Through participating in community service, I learned to respect and care for others, and consider both the needs and feelings of service targets. During the pandemic, volunteer services changed from physical visits to online meetings. Hence, I co-organised online tutorial services for underprivileged students. At the beginning of the project, I realised online learning brought us many challenges. The continuous network delays were frustrating but we were not discouraged and adopted different approaches to solve the unprecedented problems. With the concerted effort of the service team, we have expanded our service scope to local and ethnic minority children, and the elderly. After the resumption of in-person volunteer work, I initiated various service projects for children to explore their creativity and potential. I visited elderly people with long-term illnesses and took care of their mental health and daily needs. Diverse experiences fueled my passion for serving the community and developed my empathy. “It only takes a spark to get a fire going.” Our contribution may be meagre, but our effort can bring hope to different families. Our school’s motto “Daily Giving Service” has inspired me to be more committed to serving the community and seizing every opportunity to inspire more people to express their love and care for our society.

Apart from studying, I continue to practice archery and suona. I believe that as long as I manage my time well and strive for continuous improvement, I will be able to achieve my goals. Failures befell me, yet hardships transformed into motivations. These experiences fostered my tenacity and instilled a firm trust in my ability to face challenges.

I am honoured to be selected as an “Outstanding Student” and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Youth Arch Foundation for giving me this valuable learning opportunity.  I must also express my utmost gratitude to my school, especially my headmistress, Mrs. Lau, for her ceaseless support and guidance, as well as my parents and friends who are always by my side.

Every adversity is an opportunity for growth. As young people, we have limitless potential and we must be confident and courageous to take on responsibilities and contribute to society.
