Gazing aimlessly out of the window, a 6-year old was overwhelmed with questions: “What difference would the world be without me? What is my purpose in this world?”
Gratefully, I was able to discover my value in life through volunteering. Initially, I was ecstatic about serving others due to the feeling of satisfaction upon witnessing my impact. However, while organizing a learning program for ADHD children, one incident struck me hard. We were introducing the rules of a game when a child asked, “When can I go down to play in the park?” It was a heartbreaking scene, yet it guided me to contemplate on the purpose of our program – was it for the sake of our own satisfaction, or were we truly devoted to supporting the children?
Having been volunteering with the Direction Association for the Handicapped for the past few years, I am grateful to have organized workshops, advocacy campaigns and experiential learning programs for people with severe physical impairment. The remarkable talents of the physically disabled inspired me to develop the “equally different” perspective and advocate this to the community: despite the fact that the disabled may encounter a cascade of barriers in their pursuit of dreams, they can still shine in their unique ways.
These experiences interacting with people from diverse backgrounds widened my perspectives and gave me insight to the true meaning of “Outstanding”:
Outstanding is contributing to society, not from our own standpoint, but from the society’s standpoints. This switch of perspective allows us to enhance mutual understanding and foster inclusivity between groups.
Outstanding is not only about upgrading our knowledge and skills, but also utilizing them to empower others.
Outstanding is being perseverant in search for life’s purpose, regardless of the uncertainties and difficulties along the way.
To date, although I still haven’t found an absolute answer to the existential questions I raised as a child, I am determined to persist in the journey of discovering my value in this world. I aspire to pursue my future studies in the behavioral and cognitive sciences, and contribute back to society through the realms of education, advocacy and research. It is my mission to change social norms and human perspectives such that discrimination and bullying will no longer be tolerated!
