The moment my head dips below the surface, the world goes silent. For years, this quiet space was where I calculated my value, measuring it strictly in podium finishes and perfectly executed routines. Competing at the World Aquatics Championships was the height of this mindset. However, I didn’t realize that this version of success was as fragile as the reflection on the water surface.
That reflection shattered last year. A ligament injury and a sudden performance slump sent me spiralling into self-doubt. Skills I had perfected for years deserted me, forcing me to return to basic fundamentals. The question that haunted my training was difficult: did I love the sport, or just the prizes?
My breakthrough occurred not in competition, but in training sessions. I discovered a love for the sport itself and the courage to show up regardless of the reward. I learned to “fail forward,” treating challenges as guides rather than defeats. This rebuilt my self-worth on a solid core that no setback could shake.
This resilience rippled into every area of my life. I approached my studies with a focus on process, resulting in a thirty-place jump in my academic ranking. It also transformed my service as a Feeding Hong Kong Bread Runner and St. John Ambulance Corporal; I moved beyond providing immediate help to analysing the root causes of community problems.
This analytical approach culminated in my team winning the Millennium Entrepreneurship Programme. It taught me to break a problem down and build a solution from the ground up.
My time in the water has taught me that true success isn’t defined by a medal, but by the strength gained from the process. I am eager to bring this resilient, problem-solving mindset to my future endeavours and make more impact beyond the pool and beyond the podium.
