Everyone has their own definition of “outstanding.” In my journey of exploring my passion and serving communities, I have found my own interpretation of being “outstanding.”

Since childhood, I have had the aspiration to pursue architecture. To me, architecture is not only about designing, but it is also a way of innovation, the process of problem-solving, and art curation. Although my drawing skills and creativity were challenged during childhood, I maintained an unwavering determination to explore my architectural fantasies. As part of a research internship at CityU, I investigated and proposed designs for the sustainable redevelopment of the HK Space Museum. My reorganized functional spaces which involved a fluid circulation system and additional solar panels, won the Best Design Award and the Outstanding Intern Award. I then took college courses examining the effectiveness of Singapore’s policies and designing future urban solutions to achieve sustainability.

Discovering the plastic waste crisis in the two coastal cities where I grew up, Xiamen and Hong Kong, I used architecture as a creative solution to environmental problems. By reshaping plastic cups, I created prototypes of installation art, product designs, and micro-architectural spaces. Collaborating with community centers, local NGOs, and schools in Hong Kong, I founded initiatives to conduct workshops on sustainable design to promote sustainability and environmental equity. Witnessing the original plastic waste products now carry the ingenuities of environmental design, I realized the significance of transforming passion and compassion into action.

From my educational experiences, I understood that inequalities stem from both inadequate resources and a lack of interaction within and between cultural entities. To build a sustainable community, I joined a student-led organization that tutored three children from Shanghai every Sunday morning. Their longing for knowledge was heartwarming, inspiring me to further advocate for intercultural equity and communication. With my interest in literature and public speaking, I led the two Chinese debate teams at my former and my current school to win the first Chinese debate championship for each school. To expand cross-cultural collaboration in my community, I have launched charitable New Year events where I create handmade gifts and Chinese calligraphy, visit local elderly homes, and give gifts and warmth to elderly people living alone.

With passion and compassion, I have found the meaning of creating, teaching, and giving. I believe that being outstanding is to uphold greater responsibility in alleviating social problems and have the enthusiasm to encourage collaboration and interaction within communities. Being outstanding, I strive to further research, innovate, and build a sustainable community for all.
